One of our recent projects involved transforming a backyard with black slate rock, gardens, flag stone walkways, interlock driveway, fence & car gate.

Black Slate Rock Gardens

For the base of the garden the home owner and designer came up with a black slate garden, black slate rock is great for keeping the weeds out but also provides a low maintenance backyard while maintenance a dark background for the colorful plants to jump up in the spring time.

For the plants we went with a mix of native and low maintenance perennials:

4 Athyrium angustum forma rubellum Lady in Red Fern, 16 Brunnera macrophylla 'Alexander's Great' Siberian Bugloss, 7 Echinacea purpurea Purple Coneflower, 8 Hakonechloa macra All Gold Golden Japanese Forest Grass, 4 Hydrangea serrata SMNHSI Let's Dance Can Do!™ Hydrangea, 25 Ilex glabra SMNIGAB17 Gem Box® Inkberry Holly, 5 Iris germanica 'Crowned Heads' Tall Bearded Iris and 6 Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldstrum' Black Eyed Susan.

We also added moss rock around the garden beds.

Fence & Car Gate

 For the fence we did a overlap sandwich design for full privacy with 6x6 posts for a long lasting fence. The high of the fence is 6 feet where it connects to the car gate.

 Interlock Driveway

We went with a vintage stone called colonnade grey stone with a black onyx colonnade grey stone for the border in a a-type pattern. This particular stone is 70 mm which is great for a car to go on. For the depth we went 14 inches down with proper drainage stone for a long lasting interlock driveway.
